Many of you know that wither is indeed one of the strongest mobs in the whole Minecraft universe; but, is it strong enough to break obsidian blocks on its own? Obsidian blocks are the strongest and hardest blocks to break in the whole game. Let’s find out!
First, we need to learn what wither actually is. Define his abilities, learn about his spawning method, and so on.
What is Wither?
The wither is an undead hostile boss mob in Minecraft which floats and shoots explosive skulls at players and mobs. He looks like an upgraded version of wither skeleton with three heads on his body and no legs. The wither has the greatest natural health of all mobs in the Minecraft universe and is immune to fire, lava, drowning damage, and freezing.
Wither is the only source of nether stars, which are used to craft beacons. When dead, it drops 50 experience points when killed by a player or a tamed wolf. Wither has the highest health in the game with 150 hearts in total (300 life points).
How to spawn Wither?
The wither is spawned by placing 4 blocks of soul sand or soul soil in a T-shape and putting 3 wither skeleton skulls on top of the upper blocks (if confused, see the picture below for reference).
The last thing that has to be placed for the successful wither spawning is one of the three heads. All required material for Wither spawning can be found in the nether dimension, which you will need a nether portal to access.
The wither can be summoned in the overworld, the Nether, or the end dimension. However, it will cause enormous damage to its surroundings and any nearby living things. Please keep this in mind when spawning it. While targeting you, if one of the wither’s projectiles hits you, you will suffer a poison-like wither effect and take damage. Wither has many attack styles and many types of objects he uses in combat.
Now that we learned something about wither, let’s see what information we have about obsidian.
What is obsidian?
Obsidian is a dark purple block known for its high blast resistance and strength meaning that It is the strongest and the hardest block to break in the whole Minecraft world.
How can we find and obtain Obsidian?
Obsidian can be found and made. Making obsidian while pouring water over lava is the easiest and fastest way of creating obsidian blocks. It can also be found as a part of broken Nether portals on the random overworld locations, as a loot item in the Nether bastion remnant, or other non-player-made buildings. Obsidian drops itself only when mined with a diamond or netherite pickaxe; otherwise, it drops nothing. Of course, enchanting a pickaxe with efficiency and using a beacon with haste both drastically decrease the mining time.
For what can we use Obsidian?
Obsidian is useful for building explosion-resistant structures as it has, along with anvils and netherite blocks, a blast resistance of 1200 which is the highest of all blocks obtainable in Minecraft survival mode (together with crying obsidian and block of netherite). Obsidian also cannot be destroyed by the ender dragon. However, ender dragons can traverse obsidian blocks without destroying them. Obsidian can also be used for building nether portals which are used for traveling into the nether dimension. Obsidian is also used as an ingredient for crafting receipts such as the ones shown in the picture below.
Can Wither destroy Obsidian?
Now the question remains: If we have such a high resistance block, can a mob relatively stronger than ender dragon itself destroy it?
The answer is YES. Wither can break obsidian blocks, but it depends on the situation.
Wither can normally launch two types of skulls, blue skulls that eject from the center head and normal black skulls from the side heads. Blue skulls can fully destroy the stronger blocks in Minecraft, like stone blocks and iron blocks. On the other hand, the black skulls can only break weaker blocks like dirt, sand, gravel, and wood. The only way for wither to break Obsidian is by using a blue skull on the Obsidian blocks. Common black skulls are not able to break Obsidian. Wither can also break Obsidian blocks by ramming through the Obsidian continuously. Keep in mind that if spawned in an Obsidian cage, wither can charge up and send off an explosion wave. That wave can also destroy the Obsidian surrounding it.
Crying Obsidian is exactly as hard as the normal Obsidian. Crying Obsidian is just a luminous version of the normal Obsidian, so there is no difference between them when it comes to actually withstanding damage.
So, Obsidian is the best block when fighting against the wither. Having multiple layers of Obsidian keeps your building secured and more stable. We hope you learned more about whether the Wither can break Obsidian in this article, and happy gaming!
