Do you want to go to nether?
After the new 1.16 update of Minecraft, there are a lot of things that you can do in the Nether.
You can mine ancient debris, explore fortresses and bastions, barter with piglins, and can do a lot of amazing stuff.
So, in this article, I’m going to tell you how you can make a Nether Portal in Minecraft with a Diamond Pickaxe, and even without Diamond Pickaxe.
What Is A Nether Portal?
Nether Portal is a player made structure that allows them to travel between the overworld and the Nether. It can be made with a minimum size of 4×5 (without corners) and a maximum size of 23×23.
At the point when a player remains inside a functioning Nether Portal for 4 seconds while in the overworld, they are transported to the Nether, and vice versa.
Whenever wanted, a player can venture out of an entry before it finishes its movement to prematurely end the transport.
However, if the player is in creative mode, the gateway will transport the player promptly.
Even mobs can travel through the nether portal which means that any mob from nether can come in the overworld and any mob from overworld can visit nether — the only condition is that it should fit the portal frame.
How To Make a Nether Portal With a Diamond Pickaxe?
As I revealed to you earlier, you have to use a diamond pickaxe to make a Nether Portal. However, how will you make this diamond piackaxe? What’s more — what is needed to make it?
Here’re the items that you need to craft the diamon pickaxe:
- 14 Obsidian Blocks
- Flint & steel or fire charge
Obsidian: Obsidian is strongest block in Minecraft Survival that can even withstand blasts and tremendous assault harm. As there’re a ton of ways through which you can gather it, the least demanding way will be to make it using the magma and water method.

Or, you can even find the obsidian in Ravines and Ruins, and sometimes it is also found inside cave. So, if you have any cave near to you, just explore it and see what you find.
Flint & Steel: Flint & Steel is a craftable item in Minecraft that can easily make by placing flint in your inventory crafting or crafting table. The flint can be what you collect by breaking gravel and an iron ingot.
Fire charge: Fire charge is an alternative for Flint & Steel. It is made by placing gunpowder, blaze powder and coal in the crafting table.
I know many of you might be thinking that if you don’t have a Nether Portal then how will you get the blaze powder? But as I told you, this is an alternative. If someday your portal got deactivated and you are in nether, then you can use this trick to come back in the overworld.
Now, to make the nether portal, you need to first prepare a frame with 14 obsidian blocks. The base should be 4 obsidian wide, and the sides of the nether portal should be 5 obsidian high. Then, it can be activated by using Flint & Steel.
Tip: You can even remove the corner blocks if you want.
Things to remember while making the nether portal frame:
- You cannot use Crying Obsidian in place of Obsidian because that has a different purpose.
- It is always recommended making the portal near or in your house for convenience.
- Never make two portals near each other, or else they’ll connect.
How To Make a Nether Portal Without a Diamond Pickaxe?
A lot of people start their Minecraft journey, and even after a long time they don’t get Diamond so they don’t have a Diamond Pickaxe which helps a player pick up Obsidian.
In that case, what you can do? Should you just stop thinking about making a Nether Portal? Or try Mining Diamonds?
Well the good news is that you can make a nether portal even without Diamonds.
Let’s see how!

How To Activate a Nether Portal In Minecraft?
Making the frame isn’t the only thing, you now need to activate the portal to make it functional. Without activating the portal you won’t be able to visit the nether.
You can activate it a lot of ways, but there’re two common things that most players use to activate the portal.
- Flint & Steel
- Fire charge
Generally, players use Flint and Steel to activate the portal. But in case you are trapped in nether and don’t have Flint & Steel then Fire charge can be an alternative.
To activate the nether portal, take Flint & Steel or fire charge in your hand and right-click the Portal.
What to do in the Nether?
If you are playing Minecraft for the first time then you must be wondering what is the nether and what to do there?
Nether is one of the dimensions in Minecraft. It is completely different from the overworld as it has no sun and moon. It is mostly dark and surrounded by dangerous mobs.
After the 1.16 update, there is a lot of stuff you can do in the nether. Even the strongest material use to craft the strongest armor called Netherite is found in the nether.
You can’t avoid visiting the nether if you are a serious Minecraft player. Someday, you will have to visit the nether but it is always recommend to visit nether with proper arms as there are a lot of dangerous mobs lurking by.
